Where Two Worlds Met: Discovering the Real Costa Rica, Up Close

Every October, across our region, people remember the moment two worlds first came face to face. At Costa Rica NEO Travel, we believe that meeting is still the heart of authentic Costa Rica cultural experiences. “Discovery” isn’t quite the right word, and we know it. Columbus believed he had reached the Indies. Other navigators, according to old maps and records, may have charted these coasts long before. Even the name of the continent belongs to a mapmaker who never set foot here. These lands were already home to rich, living cultures with their own names and stories.

Yet something happened that can’t be undone: two very different peoples looked each other in the eye. The history is complex, with light and shadow, and we don’t hide from either. But from that encounter grew something that still defines us today: a way of living that blends, welcomes and shares.

What Remained After the Dust Settled

The language we now use to tell the world who we are. The shared table, where local corn met new ingredients and gave us
gallo pinto
,
tamales
and the afternoon cup of coffee. The music, the festivals, the faith, the way we greet each other. And above all, a lesson:
when two different people sit down and talk, both leave a little bigger than they arrived.

That, at its heart, is what great travel is.

Traveling Is Still About Meeting People

When you visit Costa Rica, you repeat that ancient gesture without even knowing it: you cross a distance to meet someone new. The difference is that today we can do it with respect, curiosity and open hands. That is the spirit behind every one of our Costa Rica cultural tours.

Many years ago, a breakdown taught me what travel is really about.

The Day Our Minibus Broke Down in Venecia de San Carlos

Back when cell phones didn’t exist and our radios almost never worked, our minibus broke down in Venecia de San Carlos. I was the group’s guide, and I knew we’d be waiting many hours for help to arrive.

My clients were French travelers, and I wasn’t about to leave them stranded on the side of the road. I decided to take them for a coffee somewhere safe, hoping to find a phone line to call for a rescue.

Walking through town, we passed the village church, and someone asked to step inside. When we opened the door, we got a surprise: a wedding was in full swing. Embarrassed, my clients turned right around. But a woman waved us in with a warm smile: stay, it’s fine.

They took seats in the back pews, quiet and curious, as only French travelers can be. By the time the ceremony ended, they were no longer just spectators. They were taking photos with the newlyweds and, before we knew it, the family invited them to the bride’s home to share the wedding meal.

We were served arroz con pollo, the dish that tastes like celebration in Costa Rica. They sipped agua dulce, a traditional drink of the countryside made from raw cane sugar, and tried what the locals jokingly call “pedo de chancho”, a homemade spirit you’ll only find at village celebrations. There was laughter, toasts in two languages and plenty of gestures where words fell short.

By the time a second minibus finally arrived to rescue us, more than four hours had passed. What looked like a disaster had turned into an afternoon no itinerary could ever have planned. We can’t manufacture a moment like that, but we can take our travelers to places where it happens. And when it does, all it takes is a town with its door open.

That’s why, at Costa Rica NEO Travel, we don’t only offer volcanoes, beaches and cloud forests (though ours are spectacular). What we want you to take home is the feeling of having been welcomed like family.

Closer to the Costa Rican Heart

That’s our motto, and it’s our promise. We are a family business, and we take that seriously. Here, you’re not a booking number. You’re a guest. We want you to meet the people who care for this land, taste food cooked with love and hear the stories from those who live them.

If the meeting of two worlds centuries ago was complicated and full of contrasts, today we have the chance to write a different chapter, one where the visitor is welcomed, and the host is heard.

This season, we invite you to be part of it.

Come and meet us. The door is open and the coffee is fresh.
