Cartago is a place that has always been known for all its mineral wealth given by the eruptions of the Irazu volcano, this allows the area to have potato, carrot, mustard and cabbage amongst other plantations, you will hear from our farmers about the rotation program they are using to avoid using the soil’s natural wealth.

The costarrican Caribbean is cradle to an enormous variety of products, but definitely it’s cover page are bananas, as they represent the main source of income for our country in terms of exports , you will also learn about its cousin, the plantain, a completely different species, get to know it and learn all the different ways it could be used. Even though it is an introduced species, the macadamia has found in our country the idyllic environment to fructify, despite the fact that it’s a very demanding kind of tree regarding its needs. Last but not least, the mysterious soursop, a fruit not many people know outside our boundaries, but here we really know how to make good use of it, if you are not careful you might become addict to Guanabana Ice Cream.

Close to our capital, in the Sarapiqui area you will see the product to whose exportations have shown a larger growth in the last years, the pineapple, as you will see it can be grown organically, which will help to get rid of some negative concepts that have given question marks to the real benefits of growing this crop. You will know, participate and prepare different dishes with delicious palmitos and their fruit, the pejibaye, no doubt your recipe book will no longer be traditional after this visit. We will Travel along time to understand the importance of cocoa, a sacred product for our indigenous, an economical answer throughout the colony, and later on an empire that has conquered the whole planet, chocolate. You will realize how wild forests were the origins of worldwide traditions in terms of gastronomy, learn about this as you learn from an unexplored product, pepper.

The northern plains shelter the San Carlos area, one of Costa Rica’s area that show a healthier wealth distribution, many believe it’s due to the different uses of soil that are possible in San Carlos, besides the fact that is has an idyllic balance between rainwater and sunlight all year round. There are products that have been grown since precolombian period, as a wide variety of tuber roots, such as manioc, malanga, tiquizque; you will notice as well important extensions of juicy oranges and fragrant guavas, a fruit that practically grows wild. We will take you to visit areas with a group that has shown a very stable growth in exports throughout the years, ornamental plants. San Carlos practices as well a double purpose ranching successfully, this way creamy milk and juicy steaks are both produced here.

The advantage of a tropical climate as the one found in the Guanacaste area is that you can grow the different products that need a considerable exposure to sunlight, before the plant or tree stresses enough to give us their fruits. This way will take you inside the plantations in which Costa Rican diet is based upon, rice. Another product that grows successfully despite the fact that it was introduced is sugar cane. You will visit the beautiful Orosi Valley where we will show you colonial traces as you are pedaling your way around the Cachi Dam, second largest in hidroelectrical energy production.

We couldn’t have a trip if we don’t take a look at the Caribbean coast, your goal here will be to pedal in order to discover the different ethnics that conform the actual costarrican. Of course you will dive into the lush Caribbean Sea.

You will also learn all about the secrets to the organically grown bananas.

Pedaling along the northern plains, you will discover the large amounts of different crops they can grow here. Don’t be afraid if someone gives you fresh grown products if you are looking tired, this is the nature of our Campesino.

You will sleep on the foothill of the magnificent Arenal Volcano. From here we will pedal to Rio Celeste to freshen up in this wonderful nature’s gift; however you need to sweat it out first. Be on the lookout because your guide will show you a living giant sometime along the road!!

Pedal around the Arenal Lake, a reknown place for local Biking competitions, but don’t rush yourself too much, instead take the time to look around you, as there will be nature everywhere you look at.

An expert in geology will be your main gate to Costa Rica, he will explain to you details concerning the different highlights of your trip, amongst them you will see:

A complex stratovolcano located at 11300 feet above sea level that has an irregular sub-conic shape, the Irazu, the mountain of earthquake and thunder, translated from indigenous dialect. It is the highest volcano in Costa Rica and southern Central America, and one of the five craters in the whole continent you can drive to. This is the volcano that welcomed Mr. John F Kennedy on March 18, 1963 as Costa Rica doesn’t have an army, he displayed natural fireworks!!

The one volcano that decided recently to wake up since 1866, the Turrialba a stratovolcano located at 11000 ft above sea level. Pyyroxenic andesites, basaltic andesites and basalts are the lavas that petrographically are found here. Luckily enough a Quetzal might distract while approaching this volcano. The Spaniards called it the “Torre Alba”, white tower as early as 1563.

Another giant that has been showing an interesting activity is really close to our capital, its summit is at 9000 feet above sea level and you can also drive to its crater, this is the Poas Volcano. Another stratovolcano of sub-conic irregular shape that holds in its main crater a most beautiful lagoon, that has been changing colors from its famous turquoise to a grayish tone, obviously related to its activity. It seems unreal how this lush forest hides such an impressive crater.

We will visit the Rio Celeste area in order to visit this magnificent formation as well as the Tenorio Volcano, whose structure holds five volcanic cones and reaches a maximum height of 6300 feet above sea level, petrographically speaking it consists of andesites, basaltic andesites and basalts. Astonishing virgin forests surround this massif, therefore you must keep your eyes open, take advantage of the fact that very few visitors get to see this forest, not to be selfish but you will have this trails to yourself. So even though this volcano doesn’t show any volcanic activity since colonial times, it’s worth visiting it for its topography and unspoiled scenery.

This crater represents a 5 miles hike and some 4000 feet higher than the ranger’s station, where your journey will begin, you will be in the only place in the world where there is an immediate transition between Tropical Dry Forest and Cloud Forest, this is the Rincon de la Vieja Volcano. The nine eruptive cones in this complex are pyroclastic cones with incidental lava flows; this volcano was referred by British sailors in the 19 th century as a “natural lighthouse”.

We will also have a close look at its fumaroles, and later on enjoy a volcanic mud treatment.

We were saving the best for last, the Arenal Volcano, no need to describe much about this world famous volcano, we will hike in recent lava flows, swim in the impressive Fortuna waterfall and finally get rid of any stress left in the natural thermal pools!!
